“Let God.” The thought made its entrance quietly into my heart on that drizzly gray afternoon while I made coleslaw. I had been in a conversation with someone about different things pertaining to the heart and as we tried to talk our way through it, I made the comment that it had been a while since my heart had been in such a turmoil.

As I listened to comments made, I began to see where I had been the cause of my own turmoil. It wasn’t that I had been wrong in my way of thinking for I felt like I was doing the will of my Father, but it was more in the way I had taken the burden on my own shoulders and into my own heart and tried to carry it. God had never given me that kind of strength.

He had given me the strength to move mountains, not carry them. Yet here I was—trying my best to shoulder it all and in great turmoil because of the load. How were we to make our way through this? What was the right way to take? Were they doing the right thing? Was I? Was my heart pure? What if? The weight of it felt too heavy.

Then, in the silence, the voice came quietly. “Let God.” As it dawned on my heart, my thoughts became a light for my feet and I’m sure God was the director of them. “Be still. He’s the only one that truly knows situations. He’s the only one that truly knows people’s hearts and if we can just let Him.”

The words seeped into every ounce of my being like living water and suddenly my load didn’t feel quite so heavy nor the burden quite so strong. God knows. He really does.

He told me once to cast all my cares upon Him for He cared for me. He told me that when I was heavy laden I could come to Him and He would give me rest. He told me that it was only his yoke that I should take upon me… not the burdens and cares of the day—but HIS yoke. Then He told me to learn of Him for his yoke was easy and his burden was light and I would find rest in my soul. Somehow I think that the rest in my soul is so much greater even than just rest in itself. For it fills my whole being.

When we “let God” and “stand back” and “be still” He can fill us and He does. And suddenly, looking on, we see He is the One now carrying a burden. As we look back, we find He took it. The heaviness is gone and it is replaced with a yoke that is very easy and a new burden that is very light. And I think when He said to “be still and know that I am God” this is partly what He meant for when we learn of Him we will know He is God. Our hearts will be still as we let Him carry these things. We will trust Him with our burdens and cares of the day, knowing that He will take care of them all.

Yes, and like the song says, sometime “I take foolish possession of life’s encumbering load. He knows just how to answer when I call upon His name, for I serve a God who hears me when I pray.”
