We had been at their wedding reception and I was impressed with his love for her. I knew all grooms had this kind of love for their brides, but this one drew me in. They wanted us to stop in and see their house and as we sat in their living room with them, he made a comment that stayed with me.

Being a farmer, he didn’t always have things to do on the farm. He looked at her with such love in his eyes and a huge smile on his face and said, “I’m gonna find other work over the winter. I’m not sure what yet, but I’m gonna do something.” I read between the lines. “I love my wife and I am no longer a care free youth. She is my responsibility now and I will care for her. I want to give her the best life possible.”

It was the next morning when I read these ancient words. “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name” (Psalm 91:14). I thought about this couple and I thought about God.

He loves us so much more than this groom does his bride. He longs to take care of us and has promised to do so. But He wants us to set our love upon Him. He wants to be first and foremost in our lives. If that young bride hadn’t put her young man first… if she had other things that were just as important to her as her husband, he would have felt that and most likely wouldn’t have thrown himself in as much as he did. But she loved him. He could see it shining in her eyes. He could see it lighting up her smile. He could see it in the way she made their house a home.

And so it is with God. When He is our all in all, He sees our love for Him shining in our eyes. He sees it lighting up our smile. He sees it in the way we make our hearts a home for Him. He says when we have set our love upon Him, He will deliver us. He will set us on high. Then He goes on to say that He will be with us in trouble, He will honor us and He will satisfy us.

What more could we ask for? To have this God—the highest Being of all—as our bridegroom! We set our love upon Him. Like this bride, we spend all our minutes and all our days caring for Him and making our hearts feel homey to Him. In return He gives us the world. No, not the world. For that would be foreign to his nature. But He gives us so much satisfaction that we feel as if we’ve been given the world.

We find ourselves needing nothing else. Psalm 37:4 says that if we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our hearts and how true that is. For when we truly delight ourselves in our Father, our desires will be for the things that are of God and we will be truly satisfied in Him.

Psalm 37:4 has often been misunderstood, but you nailed it. Thank you!
